Red Berenson's Michigan Hockey Camp
Full - Time Staff

Red Berenson brings to Michigan Hockey Camps unsurpassed credentials as coach, player, and student/athlete. He compiled 658 points in a 17-year NHL career, was NHL "Coach of the Year" in 1980, still holds a share of the U-M season scoring record with 43 goals in only 28 games and earned both BA and Masters degrees from the University in Business Administration.
Berenson's playing style was marked by intensity, speed, finesse, and "puck sense". Coach Berenson stresses to his players (and campers) and their parents, that "there's life after hockey". Education is stressed with Berenson's Michigan varsity teams and academic counseling is an integral part of the Michigan Summer Camps.

Mel Pearson is currently Michigan Hockey's Associate Head Coach and has held that position since 1988. Regarding summer camps, Mel has served in the capacity of Camp Coordinator and is responsible for hiring staff, developing both on and off-ice programs, as well as help with the daily administrative tasks. Mel played his college hockey at Michigan Tech (1977-81) and was an assistant coach there prior to coming to Michigan.

Billy Powers is currently a Michigan Hockey Assistant Coach and has held that position since 1992. Regarding summer camps, Billy helps develop the on and off-ice programs. Billy lettered at U-M (1985-88) and was a 9th round draft choice of Philadelphia in 1984. Billy led Michigan in goals scored during his senior year.

Ian Hume is currently Michigan Hockey's equipment manager and has held that position since 1990. He is a certified equipment manager and is an expert skate sharpener. He is available for free skate sharpening and handles all the camp's apparel and equipment needs.

Josh Richelew is currently Director of Hockey Operations for the Michigan Hockey team and has been with the team since 1991. His camp responsibilities include overseeing the hockey camp operations as well as making sure the instruction is educationally sound.

Lora Durkee is Michigan Hockey's administrative assistant and has held that position since 2005. Lora handles the camp's daily administrative responsibilities including registration, information, and point of contact.
Goalie Coach
Goalies will be personally coached by current or former Michigan goalies. They will learn positioning, movement, fundamental skills, and the mental skills of goalkeeping. There is a low instructor/goalie ratio of 1:4 per age group.
Power Skating Instructor
All skaters will be coached by a qualified power skating instructor. They will learn techniques on how to improve the ABC’s of skating – agility, balance, and coordination. More specifically, campers will work on their improving their skating by performing drills focusing on their inside/outside edges, acceleration, agility, balance, turning, and over-speed training.
First Responder
A first responder will be present for both on and off-ice activities throughout the day. In addition, there will be a first responder present in the dormitory after the evening sessions at Yost are completed.
